You do not need your learner’s permit to start the class, but you will be required to have it before you start your behind the wheel driving. However it is strongly recommended that students have their permit before starting class, so that they can start practicing their skills learned from the driver’s education units.

Yes, in Maryland all new drivers regardless of age must complete a certified driver’s education course to get a license.
Yes. Maryland uses the GLS (Graduated Licensing System) a program that requires ALL new drivers to gain experience driving with a supervising driver. It encourages the development of safe driving skills by imposing certain limitations during each step of the licensing process. This decreases the chances of a new driver being involved in an automobile collision. To view or download the MVA’s Graduated Licensing System brochure.
On the first day of class you will need to bring: Identification (learner’s permit, birth certificate or passport), tuition payment (if you did not pay in advance) and a pen and notebook to take notes.
You can arrange to make-up the day that you missed during a later class (see class schedule). However, MVA policy requires that all students attend the first day of class, so please keep that in mind when signing up.
